BKO Quintet from Mali lights up the jardin du jazz

On a hot summer’s evening, 21 July, the BKO Quintet (BKO is the call sign for the airport Bamako, Mali’s capital, Bamako) took us on a journey through traditional Malian music. The evening’s musicians were Ibrahima Sarr (djembé, vocals), Fassara Sacko (vocals, dunun drum), Nfali Diakité (vocals, donsongoni), Abdoulaye Koné (djelingoni, vocals) et Aymeric Krol (‘strange’ drumset, vocals).

The band captured the audience’s attention from the start, drawing them in to their joyful and soulful music. Fassara’s deep and expressive voice, along with the rhythmic sounds of the djembé and the djelingoni, got the audience on their feet, dancing throughout the evening.

The concert ended on a high note with the band’s signature song, Comment ça va?, and a standing ovation from the whole audience.

Lots of people lingered on to chat with the musicians and thank the organisers for a memorable evening. The next day, the BKO Quintet travelled to Carjac in the Lot to play at the African festival Africarjac, also featuring famous Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca.

The next concert in the jardin du jazz takes place on Sunday 13 August, when we welcome jazz quartet Jazzador.
