Coco Briaval — review

27 June 2015

On a hot summer’s evening, what could be more delightful than the sultry sounds of a gypsy jazz band? On Saturday 27 June we were treated to a stunning performance of ‘jazz manouche’ by Coco Briaval, in Thézan des Corbières’ jardin du jazz.

We welcomed a larger audience than ever before, which included Dennis and Liz Simpson who run Smalls, an acoustic jazz club in Brighton.

Everyone was enraptured by the Briaval family’s music. Playing classics by Charlie Parker and Stan Getz, as well as many other well known and less well known numbers, the band created magical moments of sheer beauty. Each member of the family treated us to soaring solos — Zézé on sax, Coco and Pascal on guitar, and Gilbert on percussion. There seemed to be a real connection between the band and the audience throughout the whole evening.

The next concert takes place on Sunday 19 July, when the Harlem Fantasy Orchestra pays tribute to the early years of Duke Ellington. We’re looking forward to it with great excitement. We anticipate another capacity crowd, so please do book your tickets in advance.
