A journey through the world of jazz

As usual, the Jardin du jazz was packed on Sunday 13 August — the concert had sold out by Friday evening.

Jazzador is a quartet based in the Perpignan area: Lutz Foerster (tenor and soprano sax), André Kaleykis (guitar), Henry Shaftoe (percussion) et Jérôme Avril (double bass and trombone). They have been playing together for four years, at festivals in the Pyrenees Orientales (including Port Barcares and Cérét) and at other events in the region.

The quartet draws its inspiration from many musical influences and delights with every performance. From Jan Garbarek (the Norwegian saxophonist who is Foerster’s inspiration) to jazz funk, bossa nova, groove and tango, the four musicians took us on a journey through their musical melting pot. They also played original compositions by both Foerster and Kaleykis. Lutz Foerster describes their musical identity as ‘acoustic landscape’ or ‘soundscape.’

The jardin’s audience has reacted to the eclectic nature of this year’s programme with great enthusiasm, applauding BKO Quintet’s Malian music played on traditional instruments as eagerly as the soaring Garbarek-inspired music of Jazzador.

The next concert is on Saturday 2 September, when we welcome back flamenco group Azulenca.
