The artist on his work
A New Englander by birth, Christopher graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in the US. For the past 25 years, he’s lived and worked in France, splitting his time between Ribaute in the Aude and Los Angeles.
After a long career working with images (cinematic special effects, advertising and visual marketing), it was time to focus on my own work. My professional experience has helped me to develop a style based on photographic composition, light and shadows, and intricate and overlapping patterns.
In this exhibition, I aim to show a renewed expression of states of tension and/or harmony through several series of works.
Landscapes series. An ongoing attempt to represent the world in a moment of perfect balance, in relation to the ‘natural/unforced’ arrangement of different elements.
Trees series. A strictly graphical creation whose pared-back imagery allows me to discover/recreate the power and simplicity of a universally and personally fertile symbol.
Gordian Knot series. Exploring the concept of strength and form, and the challenge of the human condition. This series is part of a complementary dialectic with the Trees series. The work is demanding, and forces me to think about human body language.
Fayoum series. An attempt to represent grace and its fragility. Following the style of Egyptian funeral portraits, I use slate as I attempt to capture this fleeting beauty in my ‘boxes’.
