Azulenca — 2016 review

Azulenca @ la Douceur des Arts 2016

On a Saturday summer evening towards the end of August, the Jazz garden hosted the flamenco group AZULENCA for the last concert of the season. The musicians lit up the evening with their musical arabesques, accompanying the pure vocals and elegant dance steps of Sylvia Morales. The large audience gathered eagerly in the garden from 7 pm to listen to Pascal Thibaut (acoustic guitar, Max Richard (percussion, drums), Nicolas Thevenin (double bass), Sylvia Morales (vocals).

Azulenca delighted the audience, as did the Jean MichelCabrol Quartet and Coco Briaval earlier in the season. Azulenca’s talent and musical grace shows in their repertoire which mixes traditional rhythms of popular Flamenco with more modern interpretations and original compositions..

The first half consisted of songs from their first album Plaza Massena : Camelo, Nada, Penitas, Cantare, Soleadagio… After the interval, they played new pieces which will appear on the next album coming out in spring 2017.

This year’s jazz season ended with a beautiful Flamenco concert, a promise of a new successful season in 2017. The mix of local people (50% from the village for this last concert) and others from further afield seems to be taking root. One of the challenges the organisers set themselves from the start — to install a jazz scene in Thezan —is perhaps coming to life.
