Harlem Fantasy Orchestra — review

19 July 2015

Harlem Fantasy Orchestra

On Sunday 19 July it was a date with the Harlem Fantasy Orchestra in the jardin du jazz in Thézan.

The band’s leader, Eric Gilles, opened our 2014 season with L’Affaire à Swing. This time he was back with his tenor banjo and a different line-up of musicians: Renaud Perrais on clarinet, trumpet and baritone sax; Christophe Tellez on alto and soprano sax; Eric Martignoles on trombone; Stéphane Moncassin on sousaphone; and Xavier Bonnery on percussion.

The band’s masterful arrangements allowed the six musicians to recreate the ‘big band’ sound and retain all the musical colour of the Duke Ellington originals.

A number of classic pieces, including ‘Just Squeeze Me’, ‘Blues with a Feeling’ and, of course, the wonderful ‘Black Beauty’, wowed the crowd and got quite a few people up on their feet and dancing.

The next concert in the series is on Wednesday 19 August with JM Cabrol and his band Carré d’As. We suggest you book your seats in advance!
